Role

AFI connects policymakers in developing countries with the right knowledge, resources and strategic partners at the right time, so that they can develop and implement the most appropriate financial inclusion solutions for their countries’ individual circumstances.

AFI performs three main roles:

Enables policymakers in developing countries to share and develop their knowledge of cutting-edge policies that deliver tangible results
  • Online and face-to-face meetings (regional and global)
  • All learnings captured centrally so others can benefit
  • Focused on evidence-based policy area (currently six)
Provides policymakers with grants to develop and implement their chosen solutions
  • Short-term grants: e.g. diagnostic studies, drafting regulations
  • Longer-term grants: e.g. implementation and impact assessment
Connects policymakers with the right strategic partners across the value chain
Why was AFI created?

Developing countries have pioneered many of the most innovative solutions for increasing financial access for the poor. However, the knowledge of these solutions is scattered across the globe. Policymakers also face a bewildering choice of nearly 200 potential strategic partners and other players in the financial inclusion "space".

AFI brings together all these pieces of the puzzle at the right time – the knowledge, resources and partners. In effect, we optimize the flow and quality of knowledge, enabling policymakers and strategic partners to optimize the impact of their resources.
